Electric Deregulation Bill Charges to Phase Out Soon

Hundreds of thousands of Texans continue paying charges associated with the state’s transition to retail electric deregulation — even though the market change occurred nearly two decades ago.

That’s what we discovered in our review of multiple regulatory filings at the Texas Public Utility Commission. Cumulatively, the charges have totaled more than $6.7 billion. Utility customers — both home users or businesses — have paid them as part of their transmission and distribution rates for years.

Although still on many customer bills, the last of these charges should phase out in the coming months.

Electricity consumption and renewable energy generation have increased this summer — those are two take-away findings from a recent presentation at the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the organization that manages the state’s primary electric power grid.
